Domestic or Homegrown Terrorism Who’s protecting our nation’s power grid
The Threat is Real!
The Threat is Real!
The United States power system in the Lower 48 states is made up of only three main interconnections, which operate largely independently from each other with limited transfers of power between them. Electric utilities are faced with a complex challenge to protect a system that is immense and spread out over the entire country, including in many remote areas. The system has over 55,000 substations, 600,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and 5.5 million miles of local distribution lines. Much of the system was built decades ago without security measures factored into the original design.
At least six attacks at electricity substations in Washington and Oregon, including two at Puget Sound Energy substations, have been reported to the FBI in recent weeks before the North Carolina substation attack. And in the latest on January 4, a man was accused of breaking into the Mega Solar Array facility on U.S. 93 in Las Vegas causing damage by setting a vehicle on fire. Until now electrical substations, water treatment facilities and cell towers have always been considered as soft targets but in reality they are the Achilles' heel of our utility infrastructure and in most cases either under- or not secured at all mainly due to their remote locations.
BOS has been researching our country’s unique infrastructural design of our power substations, water treatment facilities and cell towers platforms throughout the U.S. and what we have found is that these sites are located in some of the most remote areas here in the U.S., mainly in wooded or low level water regions in which they all have very limited access with only a chain link fence and no cameras for security. These are prime candidates for soft targets that are really the Achilles’ heel of this country as stated earlier.
Black OPS Infrastructure Security Systems (ISS) has designed a security platform that places a strong emphasis on Tactical Remote Field Security and Surveillance (TRFSS), which includes our innovative mobile security and surveillance pod technology with the combination of highly skilled and trained security specialists.
Highlights of the DSRU SYSTEM
BOS developed the ballistic vertical variable pitched louver transformer protection system to protect high voltage transformer center cores from terroristic threats such as small arms fire and debris damage from hurricane force winds without restricting crucial airflow required by the system. These lightweight and durable modular panels meet NIJ Level 3A or NIJ Level 3 protection and are fully Certified to NIJ 0108.01, which makes them virtually bulletproof.
As we stated earlier, what we have found is that a majority of our utility infrastructure facilities are located in wooded remote and sometimes low water level area sites protected by only acreage of chain-link fencing with very little or limited access. In order to ensure in-depth security, these facilities require a specialty niche security task force of security agents, field security agents that have experience and expertise in border and perimeter areas of security as well working in various types of terrain and sometimes extreme weather conditions.
